THE WIMMERA REGION

The Wimmera region is the premier dryland farming region in Victoria where barley and wheat cereals feature with oilseeds and legumes grown to create a coloured tapestry. Malted barley and wheat, grown in the Wimmera region either on farm or by neighbours and friends are sourced by our distillers and transformed to create New Make Spirit (NMS).

This spirit is matured in Hungarian or American oak casks called Octaves that help young fiery spirits mature into well rounded, smooth and mellow whisky, rum and brandy. Our NMS is also used to create white spirits such as vodka and gin spirits that are mixed to create readily accessible cocktails.

Major Thomas Mitchell first surveyed the area in 1836 and references suggest that the area was named after an Aboriginal term meaning boomerang, throwing stick, or spear. Tamarama Distillery adjoins Kara Kara National Park where the Teddington Reservoirs provide a tranquil setting for contemplation and the opportunity to create your own adventure.

The Djaara representing people of the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans are the traditional owners of the area. A Recognition and Settlement Agreement with the Victorian Government was signed on 28 March 2013 and recognises cultural and traditional practices and the unique relationship of Dja Dja Wurrung People to Country. The agreement strengthens, protects, and promotes these practices and relationship to Country for the benefit of all Victorians, now and into the future. Further details of Djaara culture and traditional practices can be accessed through their website.

Oak matured whisky, rum and brandy to white spirits that include gin, ouzo, vodka with liqueurs and cocktails offer diverse opportunities for creative spirits to enjoy our creations. We welcome suggestions for new tastes and flavours so don’t be bashful, make a suggestion and see what happens.

If you’re keen to visit the greater Wimmera area we recommend you visit the ‘Visit Wimmera Mallee’ website.
